Birmingham Sports and Education Foundation (BSEF) was formed in 2011 as the charity partner of the Birmingham Knights Basketball Team and became a registered charity in 2012. The Birmingham Knights played in the British Basketball League during the 2013-14 season and a number of the professional players became coaches for BSEF, bringing with them an incredibly high level of experience and standard of delivery. Unfortunately, the team folded in 2014 but BSEF have continued to thrive and some of the players and indeed, the head coach, continue to work for BSEF.
Given the background of our charity, it is inevitable that the roots of our organisation are embedded firmly in the sport of basketball and we feel that this under-represented sport perfectly complements the multi-cultural society that we operate in due to its universal appeal. Through our links with the sport and the extensive experience of our delivery staff, we play an important role in the development of the sport in the city and we are involved in delivery from grassroots, introductory level in primary schools all the way up to elite performance at the University of Birmingham, where our coaches run both the men’s and women’s teams.
Despite our clear focus, we are flexible to the demands of the local area and have diversified our offering in recent years to include a range of sports and have forged partnerships with a number of coaches who deliver activities including football, rugby, tennis, dance and netball.
Our projects utilise the power of sport to address a range of social issues and with the inclusion of practical health education sessions, vocational leadership training and coaching qualifications we are able to improve our participants’ health, develop their skills and provide them with routes into employment.
